Our Opinions....

EA- I personally love this movie, i think that Russel Crowe did a grea job as the part of Robin and the all around acting of this movie was great. What a great story and the way they portrayed that story was also awesome. There was a few bad things in this film but the good outweighed the bad by a lot. This movie was sorta dark colorwise it would alot easier to watch if they would of added more color, but I think they were trying to do that and there the pros so i cant really contradict what there doing but my perspective was sort of dark
JC- I didn't see the entire film, but in my opinion this film was very well done. The detail put in to every scene especially the battle scenes were terrific. They portrayed a classic story very vividly and did an excellent job choosing the actors, most specifically, Russel Crowe. The war scenes included very gruesome and high tech graphics to present an edge of your seat thriller. The color scheme was kind of blah as Evan said but I think they made up for it with every other aspect of the film.

We came to the conclusion that this movie was a great portrayel of historic events with a little twist on it and a little love story. We really enjoyed this movie for a students choice movie we made a good pick. We thought that Russel Crowe did a great job in this film and so did everyone else. this action packed film wasnt a edge of the seat kinda film but was still interesting. It was sorta dark yet it was still an easy movie to watch. Everytime you watch this film you are gonna catch something new that changes your perspective and i love that. All in all it was a great film and i would recommend it to anyone who wants to watch a action packed film with good historical backround.

Taken

Our Rank 4/5

Our Opinions...

EA- First of all Liam Neeson did a great job of acting in this film, but i just dont find this film that great i just could not relate to it. There is no way a guy can go into Europe find his daughter that had been taken and get her back in like 48 hours. I dont believe it for a second. I just found this film sorta unrealistic and just a little ridiculous. It was ok the first time i watched it in the theatres but i wouldn't watch it again. Liam Neeson did a good job at acting in this film but his daughter Kim ( Maggie Grace) did an awful job at acting.

JC- This film was great right from the get-go. My attention was immediately drawn into an action packed, suspenseful thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. Although it did seem like Bryan Mills had superhuman powers, it did describe how he had over 30 years of training and he said himself that he had a  "particular set of skills that make me a nightmare for guys like you". "I will find you, and I will kill you." After he said that I was immediately attached to whatever happened next. Bryan was just so smart and witty that everything he did was interesting and intelligent. I loved this film and would love to watch it again.

Pros and Cons
JC- The pure adrenaline packed action in this film did enough to keep me entertained. Not only was it the action but it was also the adventure Bryan had to go on in order to save his daughter. His grit and determination somehow got him out of even the most dangerous situations and allowed for him to save his daughter in a short time. The only con I can think of is the fact that Bryan seemed almost as if he was a "superhero" and there was no way he could be put down. However, that is what the movie making industry is all about, expanding our imaginations and entertaining their audiences, which is what Taken did exactly.

EA- I would have to say that the acting in this film was wondrous, Liam Neeson that is. He did a great job expressing his yearning to retrieve his daughter from those filthy men. Although I did enjoy his acting, the movie seemed almost too good to be true. The idea that somebody could get to their daughter in those circumstances, in that amount of time, is just unreal. I probably won't want to watch this film again.

Slumdog Millionaire

Our rating 4.5/5

Our opinions...

JC- I have to admit, the first time I watched this film I was anticipating a boring, uninteresting plot that would have to make up random happenings just to fill in the holes. I mean its based on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, what could possibly be contained in this film that would capture the minds of people around the World? Well, the answer to that is the contents of Slumdog Millionaire really gave you the sense of a true underdog story, that anything can happen through even a little bit of luck. The story follows Jamaal (Dev Patel) and Salim Malik (Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail) throughout their troubled parentless lives, after of course their mother is killed in a riot. It describes the young brothers' bond and relationship as they grow closer and closer together. Jamaal uses these life events to try and maneuver his way to Who Wants to be a Millionaire and eventually to the 10 million rupees question. Along these lifelong adventures, the brothers come across another orphan by the name of Latika. The three were split up when they were younger and it seemed as if Jamaal and Latika were destined to find eachother again which miraculously occurs at the end of the film.

The acting...
JC- In my opinion the acting was wondrous and gave you a really great sense of their emotions and hardships. They helped you understand vividly what the slums of India can really be like. You could see fear and even happiness in the actors' eyes as they eeked their way through very rough times. Dev Patel portrayed Jamaal perfectly displaying his determination and perserverance to succeed in life. Not to mention that this was an independent film, the so-called "no name" actors did an excellent job and would do as good or better than a famous actor would've.
EA- I like jordan thought the acting in this film was amazing. The non-stop hardships that jamal had to face were extrodinary and the actor portrayed them with amazing poise and i thought he did an awesome job. All of the actors did great jobs at the parts they did and not that i know of any Indian actors/actresses but i wouldnt of changed a thing about the acting portion of this film. I thought they did an outstanding job.

Differences between independant vs major film corporations....
Differnces in this film to normal american made big money corporations, well there was a major lack of special effects in this movie you could tell that this film was for the most part in India. Most independent will not have the financial oppurtunitys to film in tons of different sites, or use lots of like CGI or other type of computer graphics in there films. This film did not have any big name actors/actresses and from stories i have heard did not pay there children actors and actresses very well. Those actor/actresses were found in the slums and went back after the movie was made. All in all though even though this film was not made by big money corporations, i loved this movie just as much as any movie made by said big money companys. Slumdog millionaire was a great movie and would recommend it to anyone.

V For Vendetta

Our Rank 4.5/5

Our opinions....
EA- wow is all i can say about this film. Not an all star cast but sure is an all star story.
This Film has an intense story everything is based on November the 5th and the Gun Powder Plot
by Guye Fawkes. basically it is a film just bashing large government saying how out of hand and
out of control it can get in if you get a corrupt leader and a corrupt police. I thought this was my favorite film
so far in this class, and one of my all time favorites as well.
JC- This mesmorizing, eye opening, interquite piece of art captured my interest from the get-go. Like Evan said, the cast isn't well known, but they sure made a name of themselves in this film. Hugo Weaving did an unbelievable job portraying the life of ticking time bomb just waiting to explode, on the government. The way he was treated in his early life allowed him to become a mastermind of trying to overthrow the government. The plotline lead us on a rollercoaster of a ride throughout the film and kept you on the edge of your seat.

The acting...
JC- Overall, I don't think the acting could have been any better. Hugo Weaving was superb and everything he said was deep and meaningful and you really never knew what to expect from him. Also the action scenes were unreal. The detail and slowmotion really combined to make you feel as if you were right there at the scene. The utter brutality V had for his enemies was clearly shown and you got a feel for his rage and anger.
EA- I thought the acting in this film was amazing Hugo Weaving portrayed V perfectly and Natalie Portman was amazing as well. The action scenes were intense and as jordan stated you can really tell how pissed V really was at the strong central government. His character was believeable from beginning to end and he kept you on the edge of your seat the entire time.

This film we believe that the director was really trying to get across how bad a strong government can turn out to be and that sometimes people have to take it into there own hands to take back there freedom. We believe this film was an overall great film in its message and its story. It wasnt just all political though it also had an underlying love story and that also grabbed your interest as well. I would recommend this film to anyone who wants to watch a movie that will grab your attention and keep it until the finale. Great Film!

The Simpsons

Here are some of our examples of parodies, satire statements, and puns used in the film, The Simpsons.

Parody

Titanic- During Green Day's concert the stage they were playing on sunk in the same fashion as the Titanic did. Then they pulled out their violins and cellos and played the theme song to their deaths.

Spiderman- Homer named his pig "Spiderpig" and held him up to the ceiling and had him walk upside down.

Harry Potter- Homer then changed his name to "Harry Plopper" and put some glasses on him.

Satire

When they were trying to get out of the dome, Mike Tyson came up and tried punching through the dome. "below the belt"

"Black is the worst color"..."Sorry there Carl"

Maggie broke her baby bottle to use it as a weapon.

Pun

The bar in Alaska was named "Eski-moes."

The Graduate

The Graduate
4/5 stars
As we now move on to the mid-sixties, a time of rebellion and distrust, we now see an influence of that into the entertainment world. The Graduate, directed by Mike Nichols and starring  Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft is a prime example of how the times really changed from the fifties to the seventies. The path this film ventured on is one that at that time might have been controversial.
It all begins with a young, awkward lad coming home to celebrate his recent graduation from college. At his graduation party, a family friend, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) asks Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) to give her a ride home. After they arrive, she exclaims how she is afraid to be home alone and invites Ben into her house. She says she wants to show him a portrait of her daughter and proceeds to trick him into being locked in the room while she undresses and tries seducing him. Meanwhile Mr. Robinson pulls into the driveway and Ben panics and rushes downstairs to act like nothing happened at all. He then nervously says his goodbyes and heads out of the house. Feeling anxiety about his future as an adult, Benjamin decides to take it easy for awhile. With nothing better to do, he decides to take Mrs. Robinson up on her offer and invites her to the Taft Hotel where they proceed to have a little “fun”. This secretive affair continues until Mr. Braddock convinces Benjamin to take Elaine Robinson (Katharine Ross) out on a date, against his promise he had made to Mrs.Robinson to never see Elaine. Ben then askes her on a date and realizes that he has feeling for her.  Mrs.Robinson is livid and tells ben that if he continues she will let her daughter know of there affair. Ben decides he will tell her before Mrs.Robinson can and Elaine does not take it all to well. In response, Elaine moves on and starts to date Carl Smith (Brian Avery). Things between them heat up and they decide to get married. Ben finds out about this and has this idea that him and Elaine are destined for each other. He frantically makes it to the wedding on time and cries out loud for Elaine to run away with him. She does and after a brief quarrel with Elaine’s family members Ben and Elaine escape the church and runaway on an unknown path to their futures. And that is where The Graduate leaves you hanging.
Overall, when you think about it, this film was really an eye opener as far as the boundaries it crossed and how perverted it really was. Especially as a film of that time we are sure that it caused a lot of controversy. It’s kind of a sign of how the times really were back then however, and it displayed a change in the way society presented itself from the fifties to the late sixties. The very interesting and never predicting plot was enough for Evan and I to view it as a film that is worth your time watching. Dennis Hoffman does a brilliant job playing the role of the awkward and very silly Ben Braddock. Not only was The Graduate an important piece of history it was also a well put together, downright funny film and there will surely never be anything like it.

Citizen Kane

Our rating: 3 out of 5 stars.
In anticipation to the prestigous #1 critics choice film of all time, we were very excited to dive into this film and see what it was all about. Sadly, Evan and I were somewhat disappointed with this film because of our high expectations. However, this film was on top of the game as far as filming techniques and more advanced sound quality. Orson Welles displayed an almost never ending amount of symbolism in his film which kind of seemed too good to be true but did always keep you wondering. The plotline basically consists of a man named Charles Foster Kane, (Orson Welles) a man betrayed by his parents at a very young age for financial gain. He lives his life with prosperity and seems to have all a man can ask for. For a man that has everything, his dying wish are for his mere "Rosebud", leading detectives on a hunt to find out what exactly he meant by his dying words.
So Why "Rosebud"
EA-  For Charles's entire life he could have anything that he wished for, except for a few things. He would never get his childhood back that was ripped out from underneath him as a young lad, or get the time with his family back. As a kid he loved to play in the snow with his beloved sled "Rosebud" it was his only link to his childhood.
JC-  The great part of this film is the fact that it leaves you thinking as to why Kane uttered "Rosebud" as his death words. Like said in the film by the female reporter, "If you could've found out what Rosebud meant, I bet that would've explained everything," but, one word cannot describe Kane's life. The fact that they leave you hanging is what makes this film the #1 critics choice. However, if you're looking for some high flying, edge of your seat material, this is not for you. As you slowly move through the film finding more and more about Kane's life, you become overly bored and uninterested. SPOILER: Not to mention when you find out that "Rosebud" was simply his childhood sled, it kind of gives you the feeling of, "What was the point?"

Gone With the Wind

Our rating: 2 1/2 out of 5 stars.
Judging by the fact that Gone With the Wind is the number one box office hit of all-time, Evan and I were unfortunately disappointed. Victor Fleming seemed to us to do a very poor job of attempting to get the audiences attention and keep it for the whole 4 hours. If the boring and uninteresting plot wasn't enough, the overdramatic cast came across as rather annoying. Vivien Leigh, who played the part of Scarlett, seemed like she was having an emotional breakdown every other scene. It's not the fact that she was actually having problems, (which is understandable) but the fact that her crying over and over again was very unnecessary and annoying. Not to mention this film moved incredibly slow and seemed to never get anywhere which we noticed through the plot that almost sent us to sleep.

This Romance/ Drama flick all truly began at a food gathering at the Wilkes plantation. Scarlett declared her love for Ashley, only to find out Ashley was already arranged to be married to a family friend, Melanie Hamilton, (Olivia de Havilland). Heartbroken Scarlett is asked for her hand in marriage by Melanie's brother Charles Hamilton, whom she did not love. Charles is then called to war and dies while from sickness, not phasing Scarlett even one bit.  Soon, Scarlett realizes that Rhett Butler is interested in her. Scarlett tries to see the true person in Rhett but can't because really she is only interested in his money. After that, Melanie becomes ill while pregnant and makes a promise with Scarlett that she will always look after her child and Ashley. As stated in the film "Why does a girl have to be so silly to catch a husband?" Scarlett displays her desperation for Ashley. Scarlett and Rhett's relationship worsens as time goes on and Rhett begins to turn to alcohol to solve his problems. The movie does end in style though, when Rhett decides to just leave Scarlett by herself.

Overall, for a film of this time, Gone With the Wind, was put together real well as far as special effects and the actual filming. Introducing color to the theater at that time was remarkable to the viewers and people of America flocked to the theaters to see this film. However, the truth is, the film itself seemed to bore the both of us and drag on. It reminded us of the soap operas of today. We just know that we definitely will not willingly watch this film in the near future.
